Used Ford cars overview

You’re spoilt for choice when buying a used Ford. There are huge numbers of Fords on the used market, both in the volume on sale and the variety of different models. You can afford to be picky.

The best Ford models make good used buys. Prices for used Ford cars aren’t as strong as those of vehicles with more upmarket badges, so a used Ford tends to be good value.

That’s especially true if the body style is out of fashion. So, when many used buyers want an SUV or a crossover, a less trendy hatchback or an MPV can make a bargain buy.

Running costs are usually affordable, maintenance costs are sensible, and your local Ford dealer won’t be far away if your car needs a service.

If you enjoy driving, a used Ford is usually among the most fun cars of its kind. So, if you want a modest dent in your bank balance but a big smile on your face, a used Ford could be the car for you.

Popular used Ford models

The Ford range covers most bases, with a choice of sensibly priced used cars to suit most needs.

Used Ford Puma

If you want a small SUV that’s good to drive, a used Ford Puma is the one to choose. It’s nimble and brim-full of character. The interior feels a bit cheap, though, and rear-seat space is okay rather than great. The boot is huge, however, and the mechanical parts are largely well proven and reliable.

Used Ford Kuga

The Ford Kuga is typical Ford, in that it drives better than most alternatives but the cabin feels a bit ordinary. It’s definitely worth a place on your shortlist if shopping for a family SUV, thanks to the Kuga’s driver appeal, frugal hybrids, and generous equipment. Boot space could be better, though, and the infotainment is clunky.

Used Ford Focus

Generation after generation of Ford Focus have been firm favourites with keen drivers. The recent models have added plentiful passenger space to Focus’s list of qualities. Some alternatives, such as the Skoda Octavia, have bigger boots, and the choice of engines is narrow if you are shopping for a nearly new Focus.

Used Ford Fiesta

It seems crazy to think the Ford Fiesta is no longer made. Console yourself by grabbing a used Fiesta, and enjoying the car’s low price, cheap running costs, and nimble handling. Reliability is good rather than great, but any faults can usually be put right without a big bill.

Used Ford Ecosport

The Ecosport offers the high-up driving position and mini-SUV looks many buyers are looking for. However, the ride is uncomfortable and the boot is small. If you want an automatic version you’ll find the transmission is jerky. While the Ecosport isn’t a bad used car, the Puma is a better one.

FAQs

A typical mileage would be 7,000-8,000 miles per year, so multiply that by the age of the car and you’ll have a rough idea of what to expect. Don’t be put off by cars with a higher mileage. If these have covered most of their miles on motorways and A-roads they may show less wear and tear than cars used for short urban journeys.

Ford doesn’t come out on top in reliability surveys, but neither does it languish at the bottom. Niggling problems are more common than serious mechanical faults, but a Ford is unlikely to match the equivalent Hyundai or Toyota for reliability.

The Mondeo has been out of production for a long time now, and good examples make brilliant bargain buys. Of more recent models, we’d recommend the Puma. It’s great to drive and the boot is huge for a relatively small car.
