Used MG cars overview

MG’s rocket-ship climb up the car sales charts in the past few years has been astonishing, and given the value offered to buyers perhaps it’s not that surprising. Used MGs come with tempting prices and they’re often among the most affordable electric cars too, but beware the cheap cabins and fiddly infotainment systems.

Popular used MG models

MG’s used car lineup includes cutting-edge electric models such as the MG 4, as well as cheaper petrol-powered cars like the ZS and MG 3.

Used MG 4

A used MG 4 represents a very affordable way to get onto the electric car ownership ladder, and given the model’s popularity with business buyers, there’s lots to chose from in the second hand market. Make sure you go for a long-range model to get the circa-280 mile range on one charge, and get a battery health check done before buying. The MG 4 is actually surprisingly good to drive, but the cabin looks and feels cheap and the infotainment system is dreadful.

Used MG ZS

The MG ZS was the model that really re-launched MG to British buyers, after a few years of trying to re-establish the brand here. Cheap when new and even cheaper used, the ZS still manages to look smart (even if the wheels never look quite big enough) and it’s roomy inside too. The 1.0 and 1.5-litre petrol engines provide adequate performance, but the driving experience isn’t up to much and the cabin looks and feels really cheap.

Used MG HS

MG’s posher SUV (well, posher than the ZS anyway) arrived with plug-in hybrid power and styling that looked a bit like a Mazda MX-5. Roomier and more plush inside than the smaller ZS, but still plagued by some of the same cabin quality issues (and the same awful infotainment screen) the HS is OK to drive, and the plug-in hybrid model offers 32 miles of electric driving and much more power than the basic 1.5-litre petrol version.

Used MG ZS EV

The MG ZS EV sort of stealthily became an electric car hit in recent years, not least as company car buyer cottoned onto its combo of cheap pricing and zero emissions motoring. Make sure you go go for the facelifted version, which arrived in late 2021 (you can tell it apart from the older model thanks to the blanked-off grille at the front) which got a bigger battery for a useful 270 mile range. The ZS EV was never great shakes to drive, and the cabin was just as cheap as the petrol model, but it’s a good-value route into electric motoring.

Used MG 3

Originally launched as far back as 2013, MG’s smallest model is actually rather good fun to drive (you can tell that its chassis was tweaked specially for UK conditions) but the 1.5-litre petrol engine is rough and unrefined and the cabin is appallingly cheap in places. Still, it’s roomy and used prices start at well under £4,000 so perhaps we shouldn’t complain.

FAQs

No - the brand doesn't have a great reputation for reliability. Newer models should be better on the reliability front, but buy carefully.

It’s a mixed bag — MGs are very good value for money, and electric models such as the MG 4 and the ZS EV are very affordable for those looking to take their first electric motoring steps. But their poor reliability means that you need to buy very carefully, and certainly don’t buy a used MG without a full service history.

No, used MGs struggle to hold onto their value. More recent models such as the MG 4 electric and the likes of the new MG 3 Hybrid seem to be better, but the old ZS could lose as much as 70% of its original value in the first three years, well behind the industry average.
