Used Suzuki cars overview

Suzuki is synonymous with two things — small, cheap, cheerful hatchbacks (mostly the Swift) and surprisingly rugged SUVs (mostly the Vitara). The brand is also well known for the reliability of its cars, and they tend to be well-equipped as new models, so make excellent used purchases.

Popular used Suzuki models

Suzuki has long been famous for the Vitara — arguably the first leisure-oriented SUV, from way back in the 1980s — and more recently for the brilliant little Swift hatchback.

Used Suzuki Vitara

The Suzuki Vitara’s lineage stretches all the way back to 1988, but we’ll stick here with the current Vitara, launched in 2015, and which is still on sale as a new model. When it first came out, the Vitara was one of the best small SUVs around, but time and age have caught up with it in new car terms. It’s always been pretty decent to drive, and the sparky 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine gives good performance, but space in the back isn’t brilliant, and the Vitara is only okay to drive. Solidly reliable, though, as are all Suzukis.

Used Suzuki Swift

While the Swift name also has its roots in the 1980s, the current Suzuki Swift dates back to 2005, when the model was re-introduced as a surprisingly stylish small hatch, almost a cut-price Mini. Since then, the Swift hasn’t changed all that much, visually, nor even mechanically. While it has gained mild-hybrid power, and even optional four-wheel drive, there’s still a revvy 1.2-litre petrol under the bonnet. Interiors are cheap and noisy, and cramped in the back, but you won’t care once you realise how much fun a Swift can be on a twisty road. Sport versions make for appealing, cheap-to-run warm hatches.

Used Suzuki S-Cross

The S-Cross — neé the SX4 — basically takes the same chassis and engines as the Vitara and plonks a bigger, slightly more sophisticated body on top. The current version can be had with hybrid or mild-hybrid power, and both are notably more refined and comfortable to drive than the equivalent Vitara. Space inside is good, but the cabin looks and feels cheap. The S-Cross wins, though, in terms of reliability and cheap running costs. Just ignore the dreadful infotainment screen…

Used Suzuki Ignis

The diminutive Suzuki Ignis is small, cramped inside, feels dreadfully cheap and tinny, and is noisy to drive. Yet it might just charm you thanks to an engaging driving experience (it borrows the chassis from the Swift) and the option of four-wheel drive that turned the Ignis into a proper all-seasons car. Cheap to buy as a used car, very cheap to run, and solidly reliable — for all its faults, the Ignis is actually hard to beat.

Used Suzuki Jimny

The thing you have to know about the Suzuki Jimny — removed from sale as a new car because it can’t meet the current emissions regulations — is that at 60mph on a dead-straight road, it’s at the outer limits of its handling and road-holding. The Jimny might look adorably cute, but it’s actually pretty awful to drive, with poor handling and a bouncy ride quality. And yet we love it, mostly because it’s a tiny 4x4 which can go everywhere that a far more expensive Land Rover Defender can, yet for a fraction of the price and the running costs. Flawed, but adorable.

FAQs

Yes, Suzuki makes hugely reliable cars. While there have been hiccups in this reputation (the late 2000s Celerio was a black mark), Suzuki has a terrific history of making really solid cars.

When you’re buying a used Suzuki, if it’s one of the SUV models, carefully check the interior and underside of the car for damage or excessive wear and tear — because they’re affordable used cars, Suzukis often get used by tradespeople as working cars, and that can really accelerate the ageing process. Underneath, you’re looking for damage caused by over-enthusiastic off-roading. Suzuki’s are good off-road, but all cars have their limits. Beyond that, check the usual stuff — make sure you that it comes with a full and complete service history record, and take a good test drive to listen for any nasty noises.
