Used Jeep cars overview

A used Jeep will suit you if you are looking for a rugged-looking car that stands out from the more obvious choices.

Think of Jeep, and you think of a rough and tough off-roader. Although many used Jeeps still fit this template, plenty of second-hand Jeep models are now two-wheel drive. These cars may look like they would go anywhere but they are designed to be used on Tarmac first and foremost.

Go into used Jeep ownership with your eyes open, as Jeep doesn’t have a good reputation for fault-free cars. The brand performs poorly in many reliability surveys. That makes it especially important to choose a used Jeep that’s in good condition and which comes with a full service history.

Check what sort of warranty you’ll have, and consider arranging your own cover once the warranty expires.

Popular used Jeep models

These are some of the most popular used car buys from the Jeep range.

Used Jeep Compass

Think of the Compass as a shrunken version of one of Jeep’s big 4x4s. It has the looks and the off-road ability, but in a more city-friendly package. There’s not a lot of space in the back, though, and the cabin is quite noisy.

Used Jeep Renegade

If you want a compact SUV but the likes of the Honda HR-V and Seat Arona send you to sleep, the Jeep Renegade could be for you. It’s based on the Fiat 500X but looks much tougher, although the petrol models lack four-wheel drive. Choose the 4xe plug-in hybrid if you are looking for a small Jeep 4x4.

Used Jeep Avenger

The Avenger is one of Jeep’s best cars. It’s small, easy to drive, and has a more comfortable ride than most Jeep models. It does look and feel a bit cheap inside, though, and the back seats are cramped. If you love the Avenger’s styling you may overlook these shortcomings.

Used Jeep Avenger Electric

Take everything that’s appealing about the Jeep Avenger but swap to battery power and you have the Jeep Avenger Electric. It drives really well, especially around town. Although the electric model is much more expensive than the petrol version as a new car, on the used market the premium for the EV isn’t so steep.

Used Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler is the modern interpretation of an old-school Jeep. It will rival a Land Rover Defender off road and look good doing it. The trouble is, the Wrangler isn’t very comfortable, and safety standards lag behind those of most alternatives. Be ready for some big bills if the car breaks down out of warranty.

FAQs

Yes, if you value tough styling and want something out of the mainstream. Some models back up the looks with genuine off-road ability. The downside is that Jeep is far from the most reliable brand.

It depends on the model, the specification, the mileage, and the condition. Compare prices of similar cars to see if the used Jeep you are keen on is keenly priced.

There are good and bad examples of any brand. That said, recent reliability surveys don’t paint a happy picture of Jeep reliability. Buy the best example you can and consider paying for a warranty if the used Jeep you buy doesn’t have one.
